Why High SPF Sunscreen Isn’t Always Better (Yes, Really!)
13 April 2025
Let’s talk SPF. Specifically—SPF sunscreen and why higher numbers don’t always mean better protection (or better skin).
We get it. You’re standing in Boots, browsing the summer aisle, and there it is: SPF 50+ calling your name. "More protection!" it promises. But is it really doing what you think it’s doing? Not always.
In fact, Dr Des Fernandes (the skincare genius behind Environ, one of the brands we proudly stock here at Heaven at Number 7) has some pretty strong opinions on this—and we’re inclined to agree.
So, let’s set the record straight on SPF sunscreen. Because we’re all about protecting your skin without overloading it with unnecessary stuff.
What Does SPF Even Mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it mainly refers to protection against UVB rays—the ones that cause sunburn. But here’s the kicker: UVB rays only make up about 5% of the ultraviolet radiation we’re exposed to. The other 95%? That’s UVA rays—which are the sneaky ones responsible for premature ageing, pigmentation, and deeper skin damage.
So, when we focus solely on high SPF numbers, we’re not necessarily covering all the bases.
SPF 50 Isn’t That Much Stronger Than SPF 30
Let’s break it down:
- SPF 15 blocks around 93% of UVB rays
- SPF 30 blocks about 97%
- SPF 50 offers roughly 98%
That’s right. The difference between SPF 30 and 50? Just 1%. Yet SPF 50 sunscreens often contain a heavier cocktail of chemicals, which can sit on the skin, clog pores, and potentially cause irritation—especially if you’re sensitive.
And let’s be honest: how many of us apply a full ounce of SPF sunscreen and reapply every two hours like we’re supposed to? (We see you.)
The False Sense of Security
One of the biggest issues with high SPF sunscreen is that it gives people a false sense of invincibility. You might think you can stay out all day, skip reapplying, and ditch the hat and sunglasses. But all that actually leads to more UV exposure—and ironically, more skin damage.
Even the Skin Cancer Foundation agrees: no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, and no SPF will protect you all day long without topping up.
The Environ Approach: Smart Protection, Not Overkill
Dr Des Fernandes recommends a smarter approach to SPF sunscreen:
- Choose a broad-spectrum SPF (so it protects against both UVA and UVB rays)
- Stick with SPF 15–20 for daily wear
- Reapply regularly—especially after swimming or sweating
- Use sunscreens with antioxidants to neutralise free radical damage from UVA rays
And guess what? That’s exactly what Environ’s RAD SHIELD® Mineral Sunscreen offers. It’s lightweight, protective, and jam-packed with good-for-you ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and skin-loving antioxidants. Perfect for everyday use, especially when paired with your other Environ skincare faves.
